Heathrow to JFK, quick trip into NYC, JFK to Las Vegas all in 28 hours

Well hello there from me while 34,003 feet above Pittsburgh! We’ll be touching down in Las Vegas ready for an amazing week in about 4 hours or so, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to add to my blog and fill you in on what we (me and my colleague Dan) got up to...

So the day started off at 3am (UK Time) on Monday morning, it’s now 3:38am on Tuesday morning (UK Time), or 7:38pm on Monday evening (Las Vegas time) as I’m writing this and I’m beyond shattered!

3am UK – Leave Stafford towards Heathrow
6am UK – Parked car, Check-in bags, Nipped through quick security, Sat in the departure lounge
7am, 8am, 9am UK – Still sitting in the departure lounge – now ran out of Twitter tweets to read, and caught up on Digg...
10am UK – Go to actually board the flight, but got held back by the most strict security I’ve ever seen...

I had to strip down to just jeans and shirt, while my jumper, belt, coat, bag, laptop, mobile phone(s), shoes and even bottle of water were meticulously checked, not just once, but TWICE! Then finally got onto the plane... settled down, and found my in-seat on-demand entertainment console – On-demand Music, Two and a Half Men and Inglorious Basterds, sorted for the 8 hours!

12:30pm NYC (5:30pm UK) – Arrive at JFK airport, and start the world of queuing – firstly so you can hand over a piece of paper which has the same questions you sent in on their electronic form you had to submit 72 hours before leaving, but also to have your picture and fingerprints taken and stored on some non-US citizen anti-crime database... oh joy! I know the US has to be a bit more careful these days – but I think they may be either taking it a bit too far, or using it as a good excuse to data-rape all of us! Anyway (rant over)...

Then you join another queue to check in for the Las Vegas flight... but it wasn’t due to take off for another 8 hours... hmm... stuck in JFK airport for 8 hours? Or escape the airport on a mega mission to get as much of the Big Apple in, in one sitting? Decisions, decisions...

So these are all the places saw/went into:

  • Travelled on the NYC Transit all around town
  • World Trade Center Ground Zero
  • The World Finance Buildings
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Macy’s
  • Madison Square Garden
  • Empire State Building

(As pictures seem to have  stopped working, I’ll attach some of the photos later...)

So yeah, after all that, a quick trip to RadioShack (or “Geek Heaven” as it should be called) for a US mobile phone for me, and to geek out a bit, then a mad rush back to JFK for our 9pm flight...

And that’s back to where you find me now! Although in the time it has taken me to write this we’re now 34,003 feet over somewhere called Plymouth now – which I’m sure was on the south coast of England last time I looked, but I reckons we still only have 3 hours until we reach Las Vegas...

So Day One (for us at CES Unvield anyway) tomorrow... and I’ll start my daily round-ups – and I promise they’ll be a bit more newsy, rather than “oooh lookie what I did” :-p

Speak tomorrow!

Rich (while travelling at 528mph :-p)
